How to choose a web designer in Raleigh, Durham and the Triangle

The Triangle has no shortage of web designers. Search for web design in Raleigh, Durham, Cary or Chapel Hill and you will find freelancers, small studios and full-service agencies, all with attractive portfolios. Choosing well is less about finding talent and more about finding the right fit for your business, budget and timeline.

Start with what you need the website to do

Before you contact anyone, write down the one result that matters most: more calls, more quote requests, online bookings, online sales or simply a site you are not embarrassed to share. A good designer will ask about this first. A designer who starts with colors and fonts is starting in the wrong place.

Questions to ask every Triangle web designer

  1. Who will I actually work with? Find out whether the person you meet is the person who manages your project.
  2. What is included in the price? Design, content, hosting, SSL, backups, on-page SEO and changes after launch are often quoted separately.
  3. How long will it take? Ask for a timeline and what they need from you to hit it.
  4. Who owns the website and domain? You should, and you should be able to move it.
  5. What happens after launch? Ask who handles updates, security patches and small edits, and how they are billed.
  6. How will local customers find me? Look for a clear answer about service pages, Google Business Profile and local search, not a vague promise of “SEO”.
  7. When do I pay? Large up-front deposits put all the risk on you.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed first-page Google rankings. No one can promise that honestly.
  • A portfolio with no live links or no businesses like yours.
  • Hosting or the domain registered in the designer’s name with no plan to transfer it.
  • No written scope, so every change becomes an argument.

Does it matter if the designer is local?

It helps, but not for the reason most people think. You rarely need to meet in person: most projects run on short calls and online design reviews. What a local designer does bring is familiarity with the market, from how Durham customers search to which Wake County towns you should have pages for, and a shared time zone that keeps projects moving.

How to compare quotes

Put each quote into the same terms: the build cost, a year of hosting and maintenance, the likely cost of changes, and the payment terms. Our guide to what a small business website costs walks through this step by step.

Clarify the promise

A visitor should quickly understand who the service is for, why it matters and what makes it credible.

Reduce friction

Remove unnecessary steps between the visitor and the action that matters, such as a quote request, booking or purchase.

Keep the information current

Useful pages, accurate details and maintained technical foundations support trust over time.
