Core Web Vitals for small business websites: what they are and how to pass

Short answer: Core Web Vitals are Google’s three measures of page experience: Largest Contentful Paint (loading, good at 2.5 seconds or less), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness, good at 200 milliseconds or less) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability, good at 0.1 or less). They are a ranking signal, but a modest one; their bigger impact is on how many visitors stay and contact you.

Core Web Vitals sound technical, but they measure something every visitor notices: does the page load quickly, respond when I tap, and stay still while I read? Here is what each one means, the target to hit and the fixes that usually move the needle on small business sites.

The three metrics

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): loading. How long until the biggest thing on screen (usually the hero image or headline) appears. Good: 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): responsiveness. How quickly the page reacts to taps, clicks and typing. Good: 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): stability. How much the page jumps around as it loads. Good: 0.1 or less.

Google assesses each at the 75th percentile of real visits, so three out of four visitors need a good experience for the page to pass.

How to check your site for free

  1. PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev): enter a URL. The top section shows real-user data if your site has enough traffic; the lower section is a lab test with specific suggestions.
  2. Google Search Console → Core Web Vitals: groups your URLs into good, needs improvement and poor, once there is enough data.
  3. Your own phone on mobile data: the least scientific test and still one of the most useful.

Fixes that usually matter most

For slow loading (LCP)

  • Compress and resize images, and serve modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
  • Do not lazy-load the main hero image; do lazy-load images further down.
  • Use good hosting with caching and a CDN.
  • Remove sliders and autoplay videos from the top of the page.

For sluggish taps (INP)

  • Cut third-party scripts: chat widgets, multiple analytics tags, social feeds and heavy page builders are frequent culprits.
  • Remove unused plugins rather than just deactivating features.
  • Load non-essential scripts after the page is interactive.

For jumping layouts (CLS)

  • Set width and height on images and video embeds.
  • Reserve space for banners, cookie notices and ads.
  • Use font loading that does not reflow text.

Keep it in proportion

Passing Core Web Vitals will not lift a thin page above a genuinely helpful one. But a slow, jumpy site loses visitors before they read a word, and on phones that cost is immediate. Fix the big items, then put your effort into content and proof.

Every site in our $1,950-a-year package is built for speed and hosted with caching, SSL and daily backups. If your current site fails these checks, the AI Website Upgrade rebuilds it to pass, for $1,700 one-time.

Frequently asked questions

Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings?

Yes, as part of Google’s page experience signals, but relevance and content quality matter far more. Treat good vitals as a tiebreaker and a conversion booster, not a shortcut to page one.

Why does Search Console say “no data” for Core Web Vitals?

Field data comes from real Chrome users. Sites with low traffic often do not have enough visits to report. Use PageSpeed Insights lab results in the meantime.

What replaced First Input Delay?

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. It measures how quickly the page responds to clicks, taps and key presses throughout the visit.
